The low down on dried fruit!

I’ve been eating quite a lot of dried fruit recently but whilst chomping down on a bag of dried pineapple i wondered how healthy is dried fruit?

Dried fruit has extra sugars thus extra calories due to the manufacturing process, but dried fruit also has up to 3 times the fibre, vitamins and minerals as fresh fruit!!

One serving of dried fruit can provide a large portion of the daily vitamin and mineral intake! Although vitamin C is greatly reduced during the drying process. Dried fruit contains lots of fibre and provides a great source of antioxidants in particular polyphenols, polyphenols provide things such as improved blood flow, increased digestive health and reduces the risk of diseases.

So at this stage dried fruit sounds like the best thing since sliced bread! But don’t be fooled, dried fruit as mentioned earlier is high in calories and sugar! Approximately 22-55% of the sugar is fructose. Excessive consumption of fructose can cause many health problems such as weight gain, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

To combat this avoid any dried fruit which is advertised as being candied, as they contained added sugar!

Overall dried fruit does contain many health benefits and they are a much healthier alternative to things such as crisps or sweets but as anything they should only be eaten in moderation.
