I’ve been a big fan of vitamin bursting juice drinks for the past few months, with a variety of flavours packed with tonnes of added vitamins and minerals you feel like you are loading your body full of good nutrients but are you really? I’ve been researching for the past few weeks to find out more!
I’m sure we’ve all been told by now that when blending or juicing fruit it takes away the fibre and releases sugars from the fruit which is why eating fruit in its pure form is better for you. When eating fruit in its pure form we experience the full benefit from the nutrients but by drinking the blended form of the fruit we are actually consuming more sugar and calories! who knew it!
A 150ml portion of fruit juice counts as 1 of our 5 a day but no more than 1 of our 5 a day no matter how much fruit juice you consume! Don’t be fooled into thinking that drinking 300mls of fruit juice will count as 2 of your 5 a day! This is due to the amount of sugar contained in the fruit.
So should we just stop drinking fruit juice?
If like me you struggle to consume your 5 fruit and veg a day (lets face it not many do!) Experts suggest drinking a portion of fruit juice helps to contribute towards your 5 a day, its an important source of nutrients especially for people that don’t consume the 5 a day!
It is suggested that if you choose to drink fruit juice you should pick ones that are 100% fruit juice with NO added sugars!! Try to pick ones that contains berry’s or apple over citrus fruits as citrus erodes enamel. Also measure out the 150ml rather than drinking it from the bottle, it avoid over indulging and drinking excessive amounts!
Well i for one learn’t a lot about fruit juice! Who knew it could be so unhealthy! As long as you drink in small portions and maybe just use as a treat!
What’s your favourite health drink at the moment?
